36th straight for the Maisonette

BY POLLY CAMPBELL
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The exclusive list of fewer than 20 restaurants in the country to earn the top Five-Star rating from the Mobil Travel Guide is a changing one, and being listed one year is no guarantee of inclusion the next year.

Nevertheless, Cincinnati's Maisonette will earn five stars again today when Mobil releases its listing of five- and four-star restaurants for 2000.

Maisonette has earned five stars for more years than any other restaurant in the country. This year is the Sixth Street restaurant's 36th consecutive year on the list.

The five-star rating is given to restaurants that “offer a rare and unique dining experience on a consistent basis,” Mobil says. The stars appear alongside a restaurant's listing in the Mobil Travel Guide, a comprehensive directory of places to stay and dine throughout North America.

Four stars are given to restaurants that are “outstanding — worth a special trip.”

No restaurants in Greater Cincinnati will receive four stars this year, but L'Auberge in Dayton, Ohio, and Lily's in Louisville both will earn that rating.

The Mobil stars remain the most important and prestigious award to get in this country, said Joseph Reif, owner of L'Auberge.

“We feel it puts the approval on the changes we've made to keep our restaurant ahead of the game and up-to-date,” he said.
