McKee runs again for state House

Democrat member of N.Ky. caucus

BY PATRICK CROWLEY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

CYNTHIANA — State Rep. Tom McKee, a Harrison County Democrat who represents voters in two Northern Kentucky counties, will seek a third term in the Kentucky General Assembly.

Mr. McKee, 59, is a farmer who represents the 78th District in the House of Representatives. The district covers his native Harrison County as well as Pendleton and Robertson counties and five precincts in southeastern Campbell County.

“Helping the people of this district ... has been very rewarding,” Mr. McKee said. “The experience I have gained over the past three years is invaluable as the 2000 session gets under way.

“I have been able to estab lish a good working relationship with Gov. (Paul) Patton and my colleagues in the General Assembly, making it possible to do good things for this region and the entire Commonwealth,” he said.

Mr. McKee, who has farmed all his life, is involved with agriculture and tobacco issues in Frankfort.

He is a member of the Agriculture and Small Business Committee and the legislature's Tobacco Task Force, where he chairs the Special Subcommittee on Energy.

Mr. McKee is also vice chairman of two House committees, the Local Government and Tourism and Energy committees.

He is one of 13 members of the Northern Kentucky Legislative Caucus. Lawmakers say they can depend on Mr. McKee to support legislation and projects that benefit the region.

“In almost every instance, Tom will go with the rest of us in Northern Kentucky,” said House Majority Caucus Chairman Jim Callahan, D-Wilder.

“He has a real commitment to this region, but he's not afraid to show some independence and tell us what he thinks,” Mr. Callahan said.

Mr. McKee helped secure a $1 million federal grant last year to install waterlines in Northern Kentucky.

Elected in 1996 with 54 percent of the vote, Mr. McKee ran unopposed in 1998.

He has not drawn an opponent for the 2000 race, but Republican Party leaders say they are trying to recruit a candidate before the Jan. 25 filing deadline.
