2 construction workers injured
Steel column falls, knocks them down
BY LEW MOORES

READING Two construction workers were taken to University Hospital Wednesday after a steel column toppled over, knocking both men to the ground.
Reading Fire Chief Kevin Kaiser said both workers, one of whom was removed on a backboard from the pit, were taken by the Reading life squad to University.
Names of the injured were not released Wednesday afternoon, but one worker was admitted in serious condition and the other was expected to be treated and released, said a hospital spokeswoman.
The men were working on the construction of a gymnasi um behind Mount Notre Dame High School on Columbia Avenue when the fire department was called at 2:22 p.m.
Chief Kaiser said the workers had erected one steel column and were on a wall setting a second one in place when the first one toppled over. It knocked both workers into a pit about eight feet off the ground.
The beam actually only glanced them, said Chief Kaiser. He said both workers were conscious and talking. We took the cautious way of taking them to the hospital and having them evaluated.
Construction on the gymnasium began last August and is expected to be completed this June. Chief Kaiser said it was the first time the fire department has responded to an accident at the construction site at the school.
