Falmouth Police Chief dismissed

Mayor gives no reasons for his decision

BY KRISTINA GOETZ
The Cincinnati Enquirer

FALMOUTH — Police Chief Gregory Reis is out of a job. Mayor Gene Flaugher made the announcement to City Council members Tuesday but would not give any reasons for the dismissal.

“It was a decision I had to make, and I made it,” Mr. Flaugher said late Wednesday night.

Mr. Gregory has been on sick leave or vacation since early November.

He could not be reached for comment.

City Council members voted two months ago to sue him because he had not paid a private water-hauling bill that had mounted to about $11,000.

“This dismissal has absolutely, utterly nothing to do with that in no way, shape or form,” said Falmouth Councilman Don Cross.

Mr. Flaugher said the former chief paid the bill two weeks ago.

The department has struggled through several controversies recently. In June, former Officer Luther Bex was indicted on charges of raping his girlfriend in February and of having sex with a child younger than 14 twice in early 1996.

Another former officer, Mark Chandler, was charged after an off-duty fight that left a man hurt.

Both Mr. Chandler and Mr. Bex were suspended, then fired.

A year ago, the city offered classes on ethnic discrimination after a veteran officer admitted to using racial slurs in a restaurant.

Council members will discuss what the next move will be before soliciting applications.
