Quebec 4, Mighty Ducks 3

7th straight loss sets team-record

BY JOHN P. WISE
Enquirer contributor

Going into Wednesday night's game, the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks had lost six straight and their guests, the Quebec Citadelles, had lost five straight. Something had to give.

Quebec's Pierre Sevigny scored his third goal of the game with 1:44 left to beat Cincinnati 4-3 for the Ducks a seventh straight defeat, tying a team record set in Dec. 1997 in the franchise's third month of existence.

“There will be some changes,” Ducks coach Moe Mantha said after a lengthy postgame telephone conversation with David McNab, the assistant general manager of NHL parent Anaheim. “I'm sick and tired of losing.”

The loss kept the Ducks at 38 points, in last place in the Atlantic Division. They are nine points behind third-place Hershey and Philadelphia.

Phil Audet's power-play goal tied the game with 6:08 left for the Ducks. But then Sevigny beat Cincinnati goalie Gregg Naumenko with the late goal from near the left circle.

It was Naumenko's seventh straight loss, another dubious Ducks' record.

Bob Wren scored a goal in his first appearance since a November knee injury. He and his teammates had a players-only meeting after the game.

“This is our family here,” Wren said. “We've got to start playing for each other.”
