UNION TOWNSHIP A committee of parents and educators next month will present its ideas on how gifted children should be identified and taught in Lakota schools.
But until then, the Lakota Board of Education will likely follow a policy drafted by the Ohio Department of Education to meet a Feb. 1 deadline set by legislators.
Ohio law calls for school districts to formally identify students in grades kindergarten through 12 who are gifted, based on scores from a list of approved tests.
For 13 months, a committee has been looking at how students at Lakota are identified as gifted and what kind of enrichment opportunities are offered through its Scope program for students in grades 3-8 and through advanced classes at the high schools.
""This is going to broaden the identification process, said David Greenburg, Lakota's director of personnel and student services. ""More students are going to be identified as gifted in one way or the other.
