Mason girls crush USA's No. 3

Munoz has 27 in victory

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Michelle Munoz turned in one of her strongest games of the year Saturday to lead Mason, ranked No.2 in USA Today's national girls basketball poll, to a 59-35 victory over third-ranked Chicago Fenwick Oak Park at The Ameritech Chicago Basketball Shootout at Willowbrook High.

Both teams entered the game undefeated.

“We didn't know what to expect from Fenwick,” Mason coach Gerry Lackey said. “They start post players at 6-foot-4 and 6-foot-2. All the girls responded to the challenge.”

Munoz finished with 27 points to lead all scorers, but it was Mason guard Beth Jones who got the Comets rolling. Jones hit two first-quarter 3-pointers to help Mason to an 18-11 lead. The Comets outscored Fenwick 28-16 in the second and third quarters.

The victory gave Lackey his 300th coaching victory.

“It's nice to come up here and get my 300th against a strong team. It (300 wins) is a testiment to the talent I've had at Mason and Mt. Notre Dame,” Lackey said.

        MASON (59) — Stein 0 3 3, Ellis 0 7 7, Minnich 1 0 2, Shull 1 0 2, Issenmann 3 0 7, Jones 4 0 10, Munoz 12 3 27, Russell 0 1 1. Totals: 21 14 59.
