Ursuline, St. X swimmers take big leads

BY DAVE SCHUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Remember the name Whitney Myers, a 15-year-old freshman swimmer for Ursuline.

Myers introduced herself to the Cincinnati high school swimming community Saturday, anchoring the Lions' winning 400 medley relay team and winning the 400 individual medley in the Southwestern Ohio Swimming Officials Classic at St. Xavier's Keating Natatorium. She also placed second in the 500 freestyle.

Myers was one of many bright spots for an Ursuline team that took a commanding lead after the first day of com petition with 3501/2 points, ahead of Oak Hills with 209..

St. Xavier is well ahead in the boys competition, with 480 points, ahead of Anderson with 168. Scott Ransenberg (100 butterfly), Jayme Cramer (100 backstroke) and Brett Burns (200 breaststroke) were event winners for the Bombers.

        A summary of Saturday's events:

Girls
        • 400 Medley Relay: Trailing by nearly two seconds entering the final 100, Myers overcame the gap to give Ursuline the victory.

        • 200 Freestyle: Tami Ranson of Ursuline was pressed by Sarah Fiden of Fairmont, but Ranson prevailed in 1:53.72 with Fiden .05 behind.

        • 400 Individual Medley: Myers was in command from the outset and won in 4:30.72.

        • 50 Freestyle: Kelly Jones of Kettering Alter won in 24.93; Carolyn McHugh of Oak Hills was second.

        • 100 Butterfly: Ursuline's Ransom (57.99) held off teammate Kelli Krallman (59.13).

        • 100 Backstroke: Anderson freshman Megan Tomes finished in 57.95 to edge St. Ursula's Rachel Tepe (58.63).

        • 500 Freestyle: Mount Notre Dame senior Vanessa Beary swam a 5:01.14 to edge Ursuline's Myers.

        • 50 Breaststroke: Sycamore senior Kim Christensen finished in 33.23 for the victory.

        • 200 Breaststroke: After trailing early, Alter's Kelly Jones came on strong over the final 100 yards to win in 2:20.62.

Boys
        • 400 Medley Relay: St. Xavier senior Andrew Keefe took a three-second lead on the way to the win.

        • 200 Freestyle: Centerville sophomore Greg Middlet (1:44.08), the fifth fastest qualifier who held off St. Xavier senior Ransenberg (1:45.11) for the championship.

        • 400 Individual Medley: With meet record holder Jerry Frentson (Roger Bacon) looking on, Sycamore's Dan Ketchum won the race in 3:59.37 but fell four one-hundreds of a second short of the mark.

        • 50 Freestyle: Andrew Swonger of Springfield South won the race in 21.52; LaSalle junior Adam Dehne placed second.

        • 100 Butterfly: This race was close at the 50-yard mark, but St. Xavier's Ransenberg won it going away in 51.81.

        • 100 Backstroke: St. Xavier senior Cramer took a two-second lead at the halfway point and won in 50.17 to break the Classic record of 50.26 set by Graham's Justin Thornton in 1995.

        • 500 Freestyle: Sycamore's Dan took the early lead en route to a winning time of 4:32.24

        • 50 Breaststroke: Kenton Ridge junior Chris Hunter proved to be the best, covering the distance in 29.67.

        • 200 Breaststroke: One of the best breaststrokers in Ohio, Burns led from start to finish in 2:08.26.

Competition resumes tonight at 7 p.m. with the final eight events of the two-day meet.
