Police levy on Liberty Twp. ballot
BY MICHAEL D. CLARK
The Cincinnati Enquirer
LIBERTY TOWNSHIP Residents of this rapidly growing Butler County community will decide a new police tax issue in March.
A five-year, 3-mill police levy on the March 7 ballot would increase staffing by one to two officers a year beginning in 2001.
Nell Kilpatrick, township administrator, cited the community's exploding population from 9,200 in 1990 to an estimated 23,000 today and expiration of a number of federal police grants in explaining why the township is seeking the levy.
There's also the new regional highway we have to pa trol, Ms. Kilpatrick said in reference to the Michael A. Fox Highway that connects Interstate 75 with Hamilton.
We also anticipate increased commercial development and we want to provide the same, safe environment, she said.
The proposed 3-mill property tax increase consists of a renewal of a current 1.5-mill police levy, passed in 1995, and a new 1.5-mill levy.
Homeowners in the township pay $3.80 a month on the current police levy if they have a home with a market value of $100,000. If voters in March approve the proposed 3-mill levy, the cost for the same homeowner would increase to $7.88 a month.
