Four of five quintuplets breathing almost on own

The Associated Press

DAYTON, Ohio — Four of the quintuplets born at Miami Valley Hospital this week are breathing virtually on their own, with a little help from ventilators, a hospital official said Thursday.

After they were born Tuesday, the five children of Michael and Michelle DiLullo of Sidney were placed on ventilators to help them breathe.

They ranged in weight from 2 pounds, 8 ounces to 3 pounds, 3 ounces.

“Four of the five babies are breathing on their own, with just a little pressure from the ventilator,” said hospital spokeswoman Julie McEwan. She said the fifth child remains on full ventilation.

Ms. McEwan said all five babies remain in the neonatal intensive-care unit and are listed in critical but stable condition. They also are still being fed intravenously.

Mrs. DiLullo, 33, who was seven months pregnant, gave birth to the quintuplets when doctors performed a planned Caesarean section. Her due date was March 29, but doctors feared that allowing the pregnancy to continue later than mid-January would jeopardize the mother's health.

Ms. McEwan said Mrs. DiLullo hopes to be released from the hospital by Saturday.
