Man charged with stealing tools

BY DAVID ECK
Enquirer Contributor

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP — With his truck stuck in the snow, a Hamilton man called for a tow truck early Monday, expecting to be rescued.

Instead, he was arrested and charged with stealing tools from a construction site — and deputies are crediting an observant tow truck driver who answered the call.

Warren Griffin, 19, of Hamilton is charged with three counts of breaking and entering and one count of theft, all felonies.

Butler County sheriff's deputies say the tools were taken from sites in the Logsdon's Woods development.

Then the truck — with the stolen tools in it — got stuck.

“The wrecker (driver) comes to the scene and goes to hook him up and noticed the equipment,” Butler County sheriff's spokesman Brad Kraemer said.“He notified us.”

The tow truck driver's name and company are being withheld at the company's request, Mr. Kraemer said. But some are calling him a hero.

“This tow truck driver, in my opinion, deserves a medal,” said Detective Sgt. Mike Craft. “We were very, very fortunate. If you see something that doesn't look right to you or you're not comfortable with it, call us and report it.”

He said it also helped that deputies from the Liberty Township substation on Princeton Road were in the area and able to respond quickly.

The value of the stolen tools, which included several large machine saws and at least one air compressor, is more than $500, Detective Sgt. Craft said.

The thief entered three homesites, deputies said. The subdivision under construction is off Liberty-Fairfield Road along Liberty Township's western edge.

“He called for the tow truck just after midnight,” Mr. Kraemer said. “I'm not real sure what he was thinking.”
