NewCath makes All 'A' quarterfinals

BY RAY SCHAEFER

RICHMOND, Ky. — Newport Central Catholic coach Ron Dawn said his son Ronny took care of the ball Thursday. It was an understatement.

The 6-foot-2 junior guard scored a career-high 32 points to give the Ninth Region champion Thoroughbreds a 73-56 All “A” Classic state tourney win over Fourth Region champ Todd County Central.

NewCath's reward: a quarterfinal game against First Region champ Paducah St.Mary at 8 p.m. today The Vikings eliminated 10th Region winner Maysville St. Patrick 53-49.

Ronny Dawn now has 1,194 career points, good for eighth place in school history, but he was his own toughest critic.

“I think I missed too many wide-open shots,” he said. “I played well overall.”

Dawn was 10-of-19 from the field (including three 3-pointers) and 9-of-11 from the free throw line. He also had five assists.

“We lost him on some plays,” Todd Central junior guard Carlos Carneal said. “On a couple screens, I had my head turned, and he hit the wide-open shots.”

NewCath (15-5) did more than give the ball to Dawn. Senior guard Tony Bacigalupo scored 13 points and junior guard Seth Lynn added 12.

“I don't think we took care of the ball,” Ron Dawn said. “I told them our best offense was our defense...”

NewCath wasn't about to leave its perimeter offense, but by the end of the first quarter the Thoroughbreds used it to set up the inside game.

Example: with three minutes left in the first quarter, Bacigalupo found junior center Corey Myers for a layup and Ronny Dawn for another 23 seconds later. The points capped a 9-0 run that begin to break the game open.

“They broke us down with ball penetration,” Todd Central coach Dennis Pardue said.

The Rebels scored just nine points in the second quarter, went more than three minutes without a score and shot 8-of-24 from the field for the half.

Bacigalupo also scored seven points over the final 1:32 of the third quarter.

Carneal was Todd Central's main highlight. He hit a 3-pointer from 40 feet at the buzzer to end the third quarter to close NewCath's lead to 47-40, and led his team with 15 points.

Dawn put the game away with two 3-pointers, two assists that led to two layups and three free throws.
