Local golfers lurk in Phoenix Open
The Associated Press
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Middletown native Frank Lickliter thinks he is on the verge of his first PGA Tour victory.
He carded a 64 Friday, reaching the Phoenix Open midpoint at 11-under-par 131, one stroke behind leader Tom Lehman, and feeling confident.
If I keep putting myself in this position, Rocco Mediate keeps telling me I'll win by accident I'll birdie the last three holes or someone will bogey the last three holes, or something, Lickliter said. I feel like I keep getting better every year.
Covington Catholic graduate Steve Flesch, who tied with Lickliter for 28th in last week's Hope Classic, was at 135 after a 6-under 65.
I expected to play well this week, Flesch said. I played well last week, just didn't make any putts. And today, I got off to a quick start, hitting in there with a sand wedge about 10 inches on No. 10 (his first hole). I was relaxed after that quick birdie, and just let it roll.
Frost delayed the start of play for 30 minutes, and darkness forced the suspension of play with 21 still on the course. The cut was projected at 142.
SENIOR SKINS: The over-50 event, featuring the four from the original Skins Game Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Tom Watson will be played on one day, with 12 holes televised today (3 to 6 p.m.) and the final six Sunday (noon to 2 p.m.) on Channels 9, 2.
