N.Ky. boys basketball roundup


No. 4 CovCath rallies over No. 3 Highlands

        Highlands, the No.3 team in the Enquirer's Northern Kentucky boys basketball coaches poll, couldn't hold an eight-point halftime lead, losing to No.4 Covington Catholic 42-34 at Highlands Friday night.

        Highlands led 22-14 at halftime, but the Colonels outscored the Bluebirds 15-6 in the third quarter to take a 29-28 lead.

        CovCath led 39-34 with 2:22 remaining when Brian McQuade sank a 3-pointer to put the game out of reach for the Colonels.

        CovCath's Steve Purdon scored 20 points, including 16 in the second half. Matt Finke added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Colonels.

        Matt Muehlenkamp led the Bluebirds with 16 points.

        COVCATH (48) — McQuade 2 3 8, Finke 2 6 10, Dietz 1 0 2, Purdon 9 1 20, Wachs 3 2 8. Totals: 17-38, 12-17, 48.

        • Dixie Heights 48, Campbell County 44 — Kyle Howard sank two free throws with 3.2 seconds to play to seal the win for Dixie Heights.

        Steve Bramlage scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Colonels. Steve Minch led Campbell County with 13 points.

        • Conner 81, Newport 59 — Jason Edwards scored 15 and Marcus Johnson added 14 to lead Conner to the easy victory.

        Newport was 7-of-32 (21.9 percent) from the field in the first half, allowing the Cougars to take a 38-22 halftime lead.

        • Beechwood 86, Walton-Verona 69 — Senior center Matt Mercer scored a game-high 29 points and went 9-for-9 from the free-throw line, to lead Beechwood.

        John Kerns added 18 points for the Tigers.

        Robbie Huellemeier led Walton-Verona with 22 points.

        Boone County cut Simon Kenton's lead to 23-21 at the half on senior forward Matt Seever's two 3-pointers. But Simon Kenton pulled away with a 21-12 scoring edge in the third quarter.
