'Dolly' scientist foresees pig cloning for organs
BY JEFF CARLTON
The Cincinnati Enquirer
A scientist who helped clone the sheep Dolly said he foresees pigs being bred to provide organs for humans needing transplants.
Dr. Keith Campbell, a professor of animal development at Great Britain's University of Nottingham, spoke on The Ethics of Cloning and Transgenic Technology, Sunday night at the Xavier University Center in front of about 400 people.
Though he acknowledged the cloning technology's potential for abuse, Dr. Campbell chose to focus on what he considers the positive applications of cloning.
He said animals are already being developed with altered genes that produce proteins, such as factor 9, that are useful to human beings. Factor 9 is a protein useful in treating hemophilia.
The next logical step is to breed animals that could eventually be mined for organs for human beings, he said.
Some scientists say pigs are the closest genetically to humans.
His cloning experiment with Dolly helped confirm that non-reproductive adult cells contain genetic coding necessary to create a new animal.
Other animals, such as a cow and a monkey, have also been cloned. But these animals were cloned from fetal cells, not cells taken from an adult.
