TRISTATE MARKET SPOTLIGHT

Fifth Third shares up 5.5 percent

Fifth Third Bancorp rose $3.43 3/4, or 5.5 percent, to $66.37 1/2 Monday.

No news was released on the Cincinnati banking company, but financial stocks across the board made gains. Financial stocks, which are usually hurt by higher interest rates, gained in part because they've lagged behind the rest of the market for most of the last year.

Shares of Provident Financial Group Inc. were up 75 cents to $31.25; shares of Firstar Corp. gained $1.62 1/2 to $23.87 1/2; and stock in PNC Bank Corp. rose $2.12 1/2 to $48.
