NKU buys supermarket for expansion


Acquisition will protect entrance

        HIGHLAND HEIGHTS — Northern Kentucky University bought the Thriftway store property on Alexandria Pike for $2.1 million to preserve its options for development, a school vice president said Monday.

        University officials are creating a master plan for development and expansion. The 4-acre Thriftway site will help protect the entrance to the campus, Mr. Baker said.

        How it might be used hasn't been decided.

        “We've identified that property as important to us,” said Mike Baker, vice president for administrative affairs. “We did not want to let it get away.”

        The deal follows NKU's plan to buy any property bordering the school when it becomes available. Since 1993, the school has added 115 acres. Last February, the school bought 23 acres on Johns Hill Road for $130,000.

        The NKU Foundation purchased the site from Highland Heights Station Ltd., a landholding company. The foundation will sell the property to the university when it is slated for development.

        Thriftway has three years remaining on its lease. The NKU foundation will become the store's landlord. The store manager referred questions to corporate executives, who could not be reached for comment.

        Possible options for the site include creation of a one-stop enrollment services center that would put admissions, financial aid, registration and the bursar offices in one location. Now the offices occupy various floors in the Lucas Administration Building.

        Another use could be space for continuing education classes.

        “We really haven't done a lot of programming work on deciding what that could be used for,” Mr. Baker said. “We want to preserve our options.”
