Fryer fire guts Krispy Kreme

COLUMBIA TWP. A fire early Thursday gutted the Krispy Kreme doughnut shop in the 3400 block of Highland Avenue, causing an estimated $300,000 damage, fire officials said.
Golf Manor Fire Chief Greg Ballman said the blaze broke out about 2 a.m. and was reported by an employee at the nearby Wal-Mart, which is open 24 hours.
Chief Ballman said investigators suspect the blaze started in doughnut fryers after employees left about midnight. Firefighters from the Deer Park/Silverton Joint Fire Department and Amberley Village assisted.
It took us about 15 to 20 minutes to get it under control. It was a stubborn fire. It got up into duct work and between the (wooden) roof and the ceiling ... and into insulation, Chief Ballman said.
Deer Park/Silverton Firefighter Denny Meador, Jr. suffered minor burns to both hands, officials said.
Golf Manor protects the Ridge Road and Highland Avenue area of this eastern Hamilton County township under contract with Columbia Township trustees.
