CovCath, NDA win region swimming

BY RAY SCHAEFER
Enquirer contributor

TAYLOR MILL — The five words heard most often at Saturday's girls regional swimming meet were: “The winner ... Notre Dame Academy.”

Notre Dame defeated Beechwood 351-205 at Scott High School for its 18th regional title in 19 years.

Covington Catholic won its fourth regional championship since 1995 nearly as easily. The Colonels defeated Scott 347-283. Scott topped Beechwood 465-322 for the combined crown.

With such an easy win, some of the Notre Dame swimmers started thinking about the state meet in Lexington in two weeks.

“I'm just going to go down to state to do what I can do,” senior Lauren Musk said. “We're going to go down and have fun.”

Musk was a major reason Notre Dame won Saturday. She took the 200- and 500-yard freestyle titles and was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.

From the opening event, Notre Dame left little doubt who would capture the team title. The 200 medley relay team of senior Emily Maier, juniors Janet Heil and Lauren Counts and freshman Nicole Culbertson beat Beechwood by nearly two seconds. Culbertson also won the 50 freestyle.

Altogether, Notre Dame qualified at least one swimmer in five events, two each in four more and all three relay teams. The Pandas finished fifth at state last year, and coach Karen Bresser is aiming higher.

“If we could get all the (swimmers) in the finals, hopefully we'll move up,” Bresser said.

CovCath coach Steve Durkee has coached individual state champions such as Scott Ryan, Nate Dusing and Brad Knueven. But he said he also likes having the team depth to yield at least one automatic state qualifier in every event except the 100 backstroke.

“My people are dropping seconds off their preliminary times,” Durkee said. “I always thought (swimming) was a team sport.”

Junior Brett Hoersting (50 freestyle) and junior Phil Rugare (200 individual medley) won CovCath's only two individual titles, and the quartet of senior Kevin Kleman, Rugare, senior Jason Theissen and junior Matt Bertke won the 400 freestyle relay.

The boys 200 freestyle was the only race to feature two defending state champions, Scott senior Andy Seitz and Beechwood senior Tim Wera (500 freestyle). Seitz, the defending 200 state champ, de feated Wera by 1.6 seconds Saturday.

Seitz — who also took the 100 freestyle in a regional record 46.96 — said there's a bit of a rivalry with Wera, who beat him for the state 500 freestyle title last year. But he added it's more important to lower his 200 time for the state meet.

“I want to have (the 200 time) down to 1:38 by state,” Seitz said. “I'm going for a state record. It's 1:39.”

Wera rebounded to take the regional 500 title, though he said he wasn't pleased with his time of 4:44.41.
