McNicholas upsets No. 1 St. X
Rockets beat top team for 3rd year in row
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Junior forward Paul Sheehy scored 20 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, to lead McNicholas to a 63-54 upset Tuesday night of previously unbeaten St. Xavier, the No.1-ranked Division I team in the state.
Of all our victories, this would have to go I won't make a dumb statement and say it's the absolute best but this is definitely up there with the best McNick wins, said McNicholas coach Jerry Doerger, whose Division II team has now pulled upsets of the city's No.1-ranked Division I team three years in a row.
Andy Larkin, St.X's 6-foot-7 senior forward, scored 32 points, but no other St.X player could manage more than six as McNick applied pressure defense all over the floor.
St.Xavier cut McNick's lead to one, 39-38, at the end of the third quarter, but McNick never gave up the lead in the final quarter.
St.X resorted to fouling down the stretch. Sheehy made seven of eight foul shots in the fourth quarter, while sophomore point guard Geoff Hensley made six of six. McNicholas hit 17 of 21 from the foul line in the final quarter.
McNick led 30-21 at halftime. Sophomore Brian Schrin scored 10 of his 12 points for McNick before halftime. (Schrin) was definitely a key, Doerger said. He made a couple big 3s. He was the one who hit a big basket that kept (momentum) building.
