Iowa 67, Ohio St. 64

Eight-game win streak ends

The Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Once before Kyle Galloway cradled the ball and a ballgame in his hands with the clock running down. Unlike the first time, however, this time he made the most of the opportunity.

Buckeye-killer Dean Oliver kept Iowa in it with 21 points then threaded a pass to Galloway who hit a 3-pointer from the right corner with four seconds remaining to give the Hawkeyes a 67-64 upset of No. 5 Ohio State Wednesday night.

“I was happy for Galloway,” Iowa coach Steve Alford said. “He missed one like that at Indiana and you don't get many second chances. To hit a game-winner is special.”

Reminded of his earlier failure, Galloway smiled.

“Maybe that one at Indiana was a practice shot,” he said. “I saw this one coming the whole way as Dean was dribbling down the floor — and he did too. We just hoped it would play out that way.”

Up and down all season, the Hawkeyes (11-11, 4-6 Big Ten) were once again at their best against one of the nation's best.

“If a team has a number next to it, we play pretty well,” Alford said, trying to explain Iowa's victories over nationally ranked Connecticut, Kansas and Ohio State.

The loss dropped Ohio State (16-4, 7-2) into a tie for first place in the Big Ten with Michigan State. The Buckeyes had won eight straight and 12 of 13. They came into the game in sole possession of first place in the conference for the first time in eight years after Purdue upset Michigan State Tuesday night, but held it for only 24 hours while losing for the third time this season on a perimeter jumper at the finish.

Oliver hit a 3-pointer in the final minute a year ago to beat the Buckeyes in Columbus.

Galloway had 12 points and Ryan Luehrsmann 10. Reserve Rod Thompson grabbed 11 rebounds and had an assist and four points in three consecutive Iowa possessions down the stretch.

It was Oliver who raced the ball downcourt after Ohio State tied it with 11 seconds left. He split the defense, drew a defender and then flipped the pass to a wide-open Galloway in the right corner.

“I had been having trouble getting the ball because they had been double-teaming me,” Oliver said. “But they forgot to double-team me. I had the ball and I wanted to make something happen. I saw Kyle early and tried to draw a defender get it to him. I knew he'd get it down.”

Galloway added, “I was completely wide open. I was just hoping to stay incognito and not get noticed down there.”

Scoonie Penn, who scored nine of Ohio State's last 10 points, led the Buckeyes with 22 points. His 3-point try from the right wing bounced off the front of the rim as time expired.

Michael Redd added 14 points, George Reese 13 and Brian Brown 10 while Ken Johnson matched his own school record with 11 blocked shots.

Penn's two foul shots — his eighth and ninth consecutive points for Ohio State — cut a 15-point deficit early in the second half to 64-61 with 41 seconds left. After Jacob Jaacks missed two foul shots for Iowa, Redd hit the back end of a two-shot opportunity with 29 seconds left.

Rob Griffin then missed two foul shots for the Hawkeyes, with the Buckeyes hurrying downcourt. They put up three shots before Reese grabbed an offensive rebound and tied the game at 64 with 11 seconds left.

Ohio State is 26-3 in Value City Arena, two of the losses to Iowa and the other to Notre Dame — all on outside shots at the finish.

“We had our big chance,” Redd said. “Purdue did us a big favor and we gave it right back.”
