Broadcaster buys marketer
Blue Chip adds Quantum
BY JOHN ECKBERG
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Listener-appreciation lunches, more concerts and an emphasis on special events will be likely results of the purchase of Quantum Marketing Group by Cincinnati-based Blue Chip Broadcasting.
The Columbus consumer promotions company founded in 1997 has been bought by Blue Chip in an effort to drive dramatic increases in nontraditional income for Blue Chip, said Ross Love, president and chief executive of the broadcaster.
Expanded vision
Nontraditional revenues became a meaningful factor for broadcasters in the second half of the 1990s and are now a very substantial part of (broadcasting) income, Mr. Love said Monday.
Blue Chip operates 16 radio stations in Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton, Ohio, markets and the Louisville and Lexington markets in Kentucky.
It is the second-largest African-American-owned radio broadcast company in the country.
Patrick Foy, co-founder and senior partner of Quantum Marketing, will become general manager of the Quantum Marketing Group and will continue to operate out of its offices at 6089 Frantz Road in Dublin, north of Columbus.
Quantum has organized listener-appreciation lunches and breakfasts in Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus, Mr. Love said.
Areas that the division will focus on in the near future are concerts and mini-tours of national acts.
Concert experience
I suspect that we'll be able to broaden that concept, Mr. Love said.
The Coors Light Festival was purchased in 1998 by Blue Chip Broadcasting.
In 1999, R. Kelly, Dru Hill, Frankie Beverly and the late Grover Washington Jr. performed at the concert at Cinergy Field.
