Cincinnati Police Officer Kathleen Conway Hood, who was shot three times in 1998 by a man who entered her police cruiser before she returned fire and killed the intruder, has officially retired from the Cincinnati Police Division.

Officer Hood took a medical separation from the police division effective Feb. 2, after doctors determined “she would not be able to perform the duties of police officer” because of her injuries, police spokesman Lt. Ray Ruberg said Tuesday.

“She's a hero, and she will go down in history as one of our bravest police officers,” said Keith Fangman, president of Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Queen City Lodge 69.

Mr. Fangman said Officer Hood has applied for a disability pension with the state Police and Fire Disability Pension Fund.

“We (the FOP) support her completely, and because of her injuries and the trauma that she's endured we have every expectation that she will be granted a disability retirement.”

Lt. Ruberg said Officer Hood had been on injured-with-pay status for the past two years. According to police records, on Feb. 2, 1998, 23-year-old Officer Hood (then Officer Kathleen Conway, prior to her marriage to Cincinnati Police Sgt. Herbert G. Hood) was driving her cruiser in the 1600 block of Central Parkway in Over-the-Rhine when a man walked into the street.

When Officer Conway stopped, he approached her cruiser and struck her in the face with an unknown object. He then fired four shots, three of which struck Officer Conway in the legs, hip, abdomen, backside and groin.

The man, later identified as 33-year-old Daniel Williams, opened the car door, pushed Officer Hood into the passenger seat and started driving north on Central Parkway. Meanwhile, the wounded officer radioed for assistance, drew her gun and fired two shots at the intruder. The car then crashed into a building.

Mr. Williams was pronounced dead at University Hospital. Officer Conway was hospitalized in critical condition.

Police investigations determined that Officer Conway “took appropriation action in returning fire.”
