NKU to honor CF researcher, alum

BY ANDREA TORTORA
The Cincinnati Enquirer

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS — A biochemist who studies cystic fibrosis and cardiovascular disease will be honored by his alma mater today as 1999 “Outstanding Alumnus.”

Elmer Price was back at Northern Kentucky University on Thursday, teaching students about the defective proteins that cause cystic fibrosis.

“I feel a little smug when my colleagues express surprise when they learn that I, a reasonably successful professor, went to Northern Kentucky University instead of a Harvard or Yale type of college,” Mr. Price said.

Mr. Price is an associate professor and researcher in the Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Missouri. He received a chemistry degree from NKU in 1983 and a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1987.

Mr. Price has received more than $1 million in research grants and holds two patents for the development of possible treatments for cystic fibrosis.

“It is clear to me that my undergraduate education at NKU has served me well over the years, and I appreciate the quality of that experience,” Mr. Price said.

NKU officials will present the award at an annual awards banquet at the Clarion Hotel in Covington.

        Other awards include:

        • Strongest Influence Award for faculty — Sandra Easton, assistant professor of accounting in the College of Business; and Anthony Mazzaro, associate professor of social work in the College of Professional Studies and Education.

        • Professional Achievement Awards — Kimber Fender, 1981 graduate and director of the Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County; Philip Grone, 1982 graduate and staff member of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Armed Services; Rose Kluth, 1986 graduate and tribal archaeologist, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe in Minnesota; and Fred Macke Jr., 1975 graduate and senior sales vice president at West Shell Commercial Inc.

        • Distinguished Service Awards — David MacKnight, 1983 graduate and deputy attorney general in Kentucky; James Willman, 1975 graduate and vice president of operations at the Drawbridge Inn and Convention Center in Fort Mitchell.

        • Young Alumnus Award — H. Michelle Deeley, 1992 graduate and vice president of educational initiatives at the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.
