Campbell wrestlers suffer setback
Camels 4th going into semifinals

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Campbell County's chances at a state wrestling championship aren't quite pinned, but they suffered a major takedown Friday.
The Camels are fourth with 561/2 points entering today's semifinals at Farnham Dudgeon Civic Center. Louisville St.Xavier leads with 71, followed by defending state champion Woodford County's 691/2 and LaRue County's 59.
Is Campbell County coach Mike Bankemper worried? No.
“It's still mathematically possible,” he said.
Campbell County was in a nice spot after the first round: fourth place with 281/2 points behind St.Xavier with 40, LaRue with 31 and Woodford's 301/2.
What's more, eight of the Camels' 10 wrestlers won their opening matches. The other two, sophomores Josh Boggs at 130 pounds and Mark Nelson at 171, won their consolation-round openers.
But the quarterfinals? A winners-bracket wipeout: Only seniors Josh Kenneweg (125) and Scotty Fryman (140) and junior heavyweight Mike Ramsey advanced to the semifinals.
Campbell County rebounded in the consolation-bracket second round. Boggs, Nelson and seniors Rick Dawn (135), Tyler Hardy (145), Nathan Schmidt (152) won.
“I was disappointed, but we came back and made it up (in the consolation bracket),” Bankemper said.
Campbell County entered the meet as the state's fourth-ranked team.
Other local teams ranked in the top 15: Simon Kenton is eighth (36 points), Scott is tied for 10th (28), and Conner is 14th (231/2).
Locals strong at 140
There will be at least one Northern Kentuckian battling for a state title. Fryman faces Simon Kenton junior Chad Dalton in a 140-pound semifinal. They split their previous two matches, with Fryman winning at districts two weeks ago.
The fact that Dalton is even wrestling is a tribute to adrenaline and good medicine. He broke his left hip in practice last month, and he said the hip is not completely healed. Instead of resting, he ices the hip and takes an anti-inflammatory drug after every match.
“My family doctor said my season was over; I told him I have 13 days to districts,” Dalton said. “Adrenaline takes care of the pain.”
Scott duo alive
Scott teammates Jason Daviaux and Craig Collinsworth, who entered Friday with No.1 rankings in the state, kept their title hopes alive. Daviaux advanced to the 112-pound semifinals with a 9-5 decision over Corri Irving of Hopkinsville, and Collinsworth did the same by pinning Chris Sullivan of Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park.
The Irving match was the closest Daviaux has been in this year; he trailed Irving 4-2 midway through the second period.
“It was a terrible match,” Daviaux said. “It should have been better every way. I can't tell what happened. I wouldn't say I survived; I got lucky.”
Collinsworth felt differently.
“I'm wrestling pretty good,” he said. “I'm moving better. I'm working on my takedowns.”
Lovell a surprise
Ryle sophomore Jeremy Lovell showed state rankings don't mean everything. He advanced to the 160-pound semifinals by beating Matt Evans of St.Xavier, who is ranked No.2 in the state, as well as unranked Michael Jenkins of Caldwell County.
Lovell finished third at districts and fourth at regionals. He said intensity is more important than technique.
“I can't even believe I'm at state,” Lovell said. “This has been my dream since seventh grade, when I started wrestling.”
Ison hospitalized
Dixie Heights junior Lucas Ison was taken to Columbia Regional Hospital in Frankfort with what was described as a pinched nerve.
Dixie coach Frank Dichiara said Ison complained of numb ness in his arms and hands midway through his second-round 171-pound match against Fort Campbell's Pascal Johnson. Ison finished the match, a 6-5 loss, and said he felt fine, but Dichiara said Ison's brother, Josh, told him Lucas passed out moments later.
Dichiara said Ison had complained of numbness before but had always regained feeling within minutes.
