Highlands top Simon Kenton

        Highlands continues to be Simon Kenton's worst basketball nightmare.

        Though the three-time defending Ninth Region champion Bluebirds returned no starters from last season, they have been buoyed by newcomers. Friday, the unsung Bluebirds continued their mastery of the Pioneers, winning 58-46 at Simon Kenton.

        Highlands is 6-0 against Simon Kenton the past three seasons.

        The Bluebirds (16-6), ranked fifth in the Enquirer's coaches poll, had to rally after the third-ranked Pioneers took a quick 7-0 lead. Highlands senior guard John Messmer scored a game-high 24 points to lead the charge.

        Leading 40-38 entering the fourth quarter, Highlands scored the first eight points of the quarter to build an insurmountable 10-point lead.

        • Holy Cross 75, Walton-Verona 74 — Junior forward Josh Beiting hit a 10-foot jumper off the glass as time expired. Beiting finished with a game-high 26 points.

        Rob Feldman added 20 points for Holy Cross.

        Junior forward Brad Stephenson had 19 for Walton-Verona, and teammate Robbie Huellemeier added 18.

        • Conner 79, Pendleton County 73 (2 OT) — Conner made nine of 10 free throws in the second overtime — including 5-of-5 by Jeremy Stephenson — to pull away.

        Conner's Jason Hudgens made a 3-pointer with eight seconds to play in the first overtime to force the second OT.

        Jason Feeback paced Pendleton with 19 points, while Jason Edwards led Conner with a game-high 25 points.

        • Lloyd 60, Ryle 48 — Ryan Wilson had 15 points and 16 rebounds for Lloyd, which held on with impressive free-throw shooting.

        Lloyd made 21 of 27 free throws, including 11 of 13 in the fourth quarter when Ryle was fouling to try to get back into the game.

        Michael Hopkins led Lloyd with 21 points. Michael Setters led Ryle with 12 points.

        • Heritage Academy 59, Beechwood 47 — Bert Capel hit 13 straight free throws in the fourth quarter and made 19 of 21 foul shots overall, finishing with 39 points and 12 rebounds.

        Matt Mercer scored 15 points before fouling out early in the fourth quarter for Beechwood.

        • Bellevue 60, Ludlow 49 Bellevue senior guard Carl Harris totaled game highs of 18 points and eight assists. Junior forward Mike Gullett made five 3-pointers and totaled 16 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers.

        Bellevue's six 3-pointers in the second quarter put it in a commanding lead.

        • Campbell County 69, Scott 66 — Campbell County made 10 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

        Scott, ranked No.8 in the Enquirer's Northern Kentucky coaches poll, trailed the seventh-ranked Camels 44-35 after three quarters. The Eagles rallied behind Justin Morris' 10 fourth-quarter points but got no closer than the final margin.

        Jeremy Wilson scored 21 points to lead Campbell County.

        Chris Thompson paced Scott with 19 points. Ben Lye added 16.
