Princeton wrestlers soarinto contention

BY MARK SCHMETZER
Enquirer contributor

Princeton coach Tom White figured that if his best Vikings wrestled hard Friday night, they could place seven athletes into today's semifinals of the Division I sectional tournament at Fairfield.

        The Vikings wrestled hard.

Princeton is a surprising third in the team standings entering today's action, which starts with consolation matches at 10a.m. The semifinals should start at 11:45a.m. The championship round is scheduled to start at 6p.m.

“I thought we'd get five to seven wrestlers into the semifinals,” White said. “Five if we wrestled average, and seven if we wrestled hard.”

Fairfield, the highest-seeded team at the site and No.2 overall, has 12 wrestlers out of a possible 14 in the semifinals and leads the team standings. The Indians were the No.2 seed in the two-site sectional behind Moeller, which is wrestling at St.Xavier.

Fourth-seeded Harrison is in second place at Fairfield, followed by eighth-seeded Princeton and No.6 seed Oak Hills.

Freshman Mark Mathis (103 pounds) set the tone for Princeton. Mathis opened against Colerain's Shane Bastin, to whom he'd lost three times this season, including a pin in last week's Greater Miami Conference tournament. Mathis changed his tactics Friday and won 19-18.

“He stayed on his feet this time,” White said. “He hadn't been patient enough previously. He kept trying to go for the pin. A lot of times, he'd give up five points to score three.”

“Princeton's done a nice job,” Fairfield coach Ron Masanek said. “They've got some strong individuals.”

“We've got some tough draws coming up, but we've got some kids capable of winning,” White said. “Todd Neely (152) and Schuyler Maxey (145) probably have the two toughest matches.”

Carl Leugers led the Fairfield contingent into the semifinals. Leugers improved to 23-0 at 112 pounds, with pins of Hamilton's Ron Alexander and Princeton's Paul Harmon.

“It's still early,” Masanek said. “(Today's) going to be big. Right now, we're concerned with getting as many as we can through to the districts.”

The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to next weekend's district tournament.

“All you can do at this time of year is hope,” Masanek said. “They're 16- and 17-year-old kids, and you never know what's going through their minds. All you can do is prepare them and hope they get the job done.”

Harrison's Tim Ruberg improved to 26-5 with a pin, to lead nine Wildcats wrestlers into the semifinals.

“Any time you're in second place it's not a good thing, but getting nine through is always a good thing,” Harrison coach Chad Dennis said. “The nine guys we got through all were seeded, so that was expected to happen.”

The Wildcats were stung by the loss of senior 112-pounder Mark Konerman to a neck injury. Konerman beat Colerain's Sam Kunkel 10-4 in the first round, but he had to default to Sycamore's Daniel Mason-Straus in the quarterfinals.

Moeller dominant
The city's No1-ranked Moeller Crusaders team did not show any signs of postseason collapse in the first day of the Division I sectional tournament at St.Xavier.

Moeller has 12 wrestlers still participating in the 14 weight classes going into today's semifinals.

Elder and St.Xavier each had strong showings, placing 10 and eight wrestlers in the semis, respectively.

Anderson, unranked in the Enquirer's Division I coaches poll, was the surprise team of the preliminary rounds with seven wrestlers advancing to today's action.
