Today is Andy Seitz's final day of high school swimming. After the way he swam Friday, it shapes up to be a big one.
The Scott senior qualified first Friday in all four of his events in preliminaries for the Kentucky state swimming and diving championships at the University of Kentucky's Lancaster Aquatics Center. He met All-America consideration time standards in all four swims.
Seitz, a South Carolina signee, was seeded first for Friday's prelims in just one event, the 200-yard freestyle. He recorded the top time Friday in that event (1:41.68) and the 100 free (45.95). He then teamed with senior Jon Vadney, freshman Jason Vadney and junior Brian Alden to qualify first in the 200 medley relay (1:38.33), and joined those same three teammates for the top prelim time in the 200 free relay (1:28.85).
Seitz has won three state titles: the 200 free last year, and the 500 free and 100 backstroke in 1998.
Beechwood senior Tim Wera was the only other Northern Kentucky swimmer to qualify first, doing so in the 500 free (4:36.52). He qualified second in the 200 free in 1:42.76 and should battle Seitz today for that title.
Dixie Heights sophomore Mark Shattuck led qualifiers in the 1-meter diving competition with 341.25 points.
Dixie junior Michael Day qualified second in both the 100 back and 100 butterfly. Covington Catholic qualified second in both the 200 and 400 free relays.
Notre Dame senior Lauren Musk qualified second in the 500 free and helped the Pandas' 200 free relay qualify second. Notre Dame senior Emily Maier qualified second in the 100 back.
