Ball State 60, Miami 57

RedHawks lose on overtime buzzer-beater

The Cincinnati Enquirer

MUNCIE, Ind. — Say this for Miami-Ball State games: They're never dull.

Duane Clemens made a last-second 3-pointer in overtime to lift the Cardinals to a 60-57 victory over Miami in overtime Saturday. The teams played a triple-overtime game Jan.12 in Oxford, won 86-84 by the RedHawks.

That Miami even made it to OT Saturday was quite an achievement. The RedHawks twice went more than 61/2 minutes without scoring and shot just 36.7 percent for the game.

But Anthony Taylor, who led the RedHawks with 19 points, buried a 3-pointer with 8 seconds left to force overtime.

In OT, Miami had the ball with the score tied at 57 and time dwindling. Taylor missed a jumper from the corner, but Mike Ensminger got the re bound with about six seconds left and tried a put-back.

But the Cardinals' Lonnie Jones blocked Ensminger's shot right to Clemens, who dribbled upcourt and launched a running shot from the top of the key as time expired.

“It was a hell of a game,” coach Charlie Coles said. “We gave Clemens a chance. He is a very deserving hero. I think that if we are going to get beat, let's get beat by Duane Clemens.”

Clemens led all scorers with 23 points for Ball State (17-8, 9-7 Mid-American Conference), which took sole possession of first place in the MAC West division. With the Cardinals ahead 54-51, he had missed two free throws right before Taylor's 3 sent the game to overtime, but redeemed himself in OT.

“This kid has a lot of talent and great determination to win,” Ball State coach Ray McCallum said. “We got the ball to the guy we wanted to get it to.”

Miami slipped below .500 at 11-12, 7-8 MAC. The Red Hawks play at Ohio University on Monday.

“We just don't shoot the ball well,” Coles said. “This year has been tough scoring. We have a tough time getting loose to shoot the ball, and we just don't have guys that can take it to the hoop.”
