Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy took control early in the second quarter and beat Mariemont 62-44 Saturday in the second round of the Division III sectional tournament at Mason High School.

CHCA plays Madeira for the sectional title 8:30p.m. Friday at Mason.

The Eagles closed the first quarter and opened the second quarter with a 13-1 run, led by Nancy Bowden's nine points.

Mariemont closed within 10 points only once after that.

“We didn't execute very well at times tonight,” CHCA coach Tim Southerland said. “They (Mariemont) played very hard and took us out of our rhythm.”

Mariemont turned up the tempo in the fourth quarter after a three-pointer by Liz Kauffmann cut the deficit to 42-30 and Bowden fouled out with 5:20 to play.

Then CHCA senior forward Karen Hewitt scored five consecutive points to push the lead to 47-30. Hewitt's play started a 12-4 run by the Eagles.

“I wasn't willing to lose,” Hewitt said. “That's why I stepped it up.”

The Eagles overcame the loss of starting guard Keli Gentry, who suffered a bruised thigh in the first quarter and didn't return.

Kauffmann led Mariemont with 16 points; she had 10 in the fourth quarter.
