Mason chili champ relishes his victory

BY KEVIN ALDRIDGE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MASON — The only thing spicier than the taste of victory is “the taste of my chili,” Mason Fire Chief Billy Goldfeder says, still savoring his success in the inaugural Great Chili Cook-Off.

Chief Goldfeder beat out three other Mason leaders to earn the city's new Golden Ladle trophy. Despite being billed as “strictly a friendly competition,” Chief Goldfeder didn't mince words Tuesday.

“It was a landslide victory,” he said.

The final tally from Friday evening's competition had Chief Goldfeder receiving 255 votes from diners, while Mason City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kevin Bright received 249 votes. Mason Mayor John McCurley and Deerfield Township Fire Chief William Kramer finished third and fourth in the voting, respectively.

Organizers estimated more than 600 people turned out for the fund-raiser. Though final numbers have yet to be tallied, the event is thought to have raised about $2,000 for the Fine Arts Council, a group that supports and promotes the performing and visual arts in Mason City Schools.
