Pressure pledged to widen road

Turkeyfoot a priority

BY CINDY SCHROEDER
The Cincinnati Enquirer

EDGEWOOD — Kenton County Judge-executive Dick Murgatroyd told Edgewood officials Tuesday he will continue lobbying state legislators to ensure that the long-planned widening of Turkeyfoot Road and other high profile Kenton County road projects proceed without further delay.

County support for the widening of Turkeyfoot Road and progress on the installation of a regional storm-warning system were among the issues broached here Tuesday, when Kenton Fiscal Court held one of its monthly town meetings to discuss issues of local concern.

This year, Kenton Fiscal Court will meet in different cities on the fourth Tuesday of the month to learn what's on residents' minds, Mr. Murgatroyd said.

The meeting schedule is posted on the county's official web site, www.kentoncounty.org.

In his six-year road spending plan unveiled earlier this month, Gov. Paul Patton called for initial work on the Turkeyfoot widening to begin in October, 2001, with the final phase starting in 2005.

Edgewood officials are concerned because the state has proposed for years to widen Turkeyfoot Road from two to five lanes between Dudley and Richardson Roads, but nothing has happened yet, Edgewood Mayor John Link said.

Mr. Link said problems include congestion “at all hours of the day,” as well as safety concerns on a hilly section of Turkeyfoot near its intersection with Narrows Road.

Mr. Murgatroyd said county officials regularly visit Frankfort to make sure state legislators understand the importance of the Turkeyfoot Road widening, as other Kenton County road projects.

“The big question out of this session is how much will be funded out of (the governor's) six-year (road) plan,” Mr. Murgatroyd said.

Kenton Fiscal Court also told Edgewood officials that installation of the first batch of storm warning sirens began this week.

The county ultimately plans to install 28 sirens that will provide coverage to 95 percent of the county.

Unlike the present warning system, the new siren system will be zoned, so that sirens can be activated only in the parts of the county where there's a threat of severe weather.
