Cleves has opening on council
Member moving away
BY LEW MOORES

CLEVES Village council will have 30 days to choose a replacement for a council member who is moving out of the village.
The village is accepting applications from residents to replace Jim Mills, one of six council members, whose resignation is effective today.
Linda Bolton, the village clerk/treasurer, said the deadline for submitting applications is March 3. The remaining council members have 30 days to choose another council member. If they fail to choose someone, Mayor Joe Whitton can appoint one.
Ms. Bolton said whoever fills the vacancy will serve through the year 2001, but would have to stand for re-election in November 2001 for the four-year term. The village of about 2,200 is located at the western edge of Hamilton County along the Ohio River.
Mayor Whitton said he would look for an applicant who has the time and commitment to devote to the job, which involves more than just meeting twice a month and serving on committees.
Specifically, I'll be looking for someone who has the time to contribute, said Mayor Whitton. That's a big issue with us. There's a lot of ambitious things going on. At the core are the parks and recreation.
Mayor Whitton pointed out plans for constructing a BMX bike track at its Gulf Park, planning for developing soccer and baseball fields and the village's application for grants for a bike loop connecting the village with neighboring communities and sights.
Councilman Jeff Wullenweber, who was elected in November and is serving his first term, said he agrees with the mayor about the time commitment.
That would be a big thing, said Mr. Wullenweber. But also somebody looking out for the betterment of the village and someone who is civic-minded. We're trying to serve people. Even as small as it is, the village runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You've got to be available.
Growth is probably a big issue here. We all need to work together. On council we've all got to be focused.
Ms. Bolton said she has received one letter from a res ident expressing interest and has taken some calls. Mayor Whitton said he has gotten phone calls from people wanting to know how the process will work.
I suspect we're going to have three or four people at least apply for the position, said Mayor Whitton.
He said council will probably invite each applicant for an interview.
