Community Shares collections up 31.5%

BY MARK CURNUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Greater Cincinnati Community Shares' 1999 campaign collected $192,000 in 1999, an increase of more than 30 percent over the previous year's tally.

The alternative fund drive, which supports 23 organizations that do not receive United Way support, had set a 1999 goal of $185,000.

The 1999 effort was the first drive in which the city of Cincinnati's 6,500 employees had Community Shares as a payroll-deductible charity option.

“The individuals who gave to the Community Shares organizations have the assurance of knowing their contributions are well spent,” said Executive Director Mary McCoy.

The 1999 collection was 31.5 percent higher than the $146,000 brought in in 1998.

Community Shares reviews its member organizations each year. Financial records are examined. Site visits and interviews are conducted. Internal evaluations are required. Performance and accomplishments are studied.

Community Shares follows policies created by the National Alliance for Choice in Giving, an alliance of local and statewide federations that raise money for nonprofits.

The local federation has additional safeguards. For example, it doesn't allow member organizations to sell the names of its Community Shares donors, Ms. McCoy said.

Groups applying for Community Shares funding also undergo additional review.

Four organizations recently completed that process and were accepted as Community Shares members:

        • Living Arrangements for the Developmentally Disabled.

        • Madisonville Education and As sistance Center.

        • Mill Creek Restoration Project.

        • Sickle Cell Parent Family Network.

Community Shares is a payroll-deduction charity choice for the 13,500 federal government employees in Greater Cincinnati, the 13,400 employees at the University of Cincinnati and the 6,000 employees of Cincinnati Public Schools.

Last year was the fourth year Community Shares conducted workplace-based employee-giving drives.
