Springboro has Wight stuff
Leads Panthers to sectional title
BY DAVE SCHUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Lindsay Wight had not forgotten Springboro's first meeting against McNicholas on Jan.29.
I only scored four points in the game and had something to prove, said Wight, a sophomore forward. Tonight we came out hard and took it to them.
It was Wight, who scored a career-high 31 points and pulled down 16 rebounds, who enabled Springboro to pull out a 76-63 victory over McNicholas in the Division II sectional championship game at Kings.
We watched that film of the first game over and over, Springboro coach Rick Creager said. I think I knew more about McNicholas than our team.
In the first meeting, McNicholas won 62-56.
We had four goals to accomplish, Creager said. We wanted to contain Ashley Clark, not give up second and third shots, stop their transition and give them no cheap baskets. We accomplished all of them.
Springboro took a 33-23 halftime lead behind Wight, who sank seven free throws and scored a field goal in the second quarter.McNicholas made a run in the fourth quarter, pulling within four at 62-58 with 3:33 remaining. But the Panthers kept attacking and gradually pulled away.
Free-throw shooting was a major factor.
Springboro sank 31 of 45 foul shots; McNick was 18-of-33.
