Oak Ridge Boys play at Princeton High

BY SUE KIESEWETTER

SHARONVILLE — Princeton Music Boosters Treasurer Don Shrout didn't really believe it when he was told The Oak Ridge Boys agreed to do two concerts in Matthews Auditorium on March 5. Then he saw the signed contract.

“I was shocked they'd perform in such a small auditorium,” said Mr. Shrout, of Deerfield Township. “I didn't believe it at first.”

Mr. Shrout's reaction has been typical of residents in the community who still don't quite believe a national touring group agreed to perform in a 1,029-seat high school auditorium in suburban Cincinnati, said Don Freeman, Princeton's theater manager, who arranged the shows as a fund-raiser for the boosters.

“It's very gracious of them to come here,” said Mr. Freeman, who knows the “Boys” from his own work as a country-pop vocalist and song writer. So huge that Sharonville Mayor Virgil Lovitt has proclaimed March 5 Oak Ridge Boys Day and will present the group a plaque at the concert.

The group will perform two shows, one at 3 p.m., the second at 7 p.m. Fans will hear their favorite oldies “Elvira,” “Love Song” and “Bobby Sue” along with their latest hit, “No Short Way Home” from the Voices album, the first the group has released in nine years.

Proceeds from the show will benefit Princeton High's music department. If both shows are sold out, Boosters could clear $12,000 to $15,000, Mr. Freeman estimated.

“Sunday was supposed to be an off day from their tour. They're coming in from a show in Warsaw, Ind. Then they're going on to Branson, Mo.,” Mr. Freeman said.

Lead singer Duane Allen will be joined by William Lee Golden “The Mountain Man,” Richard Sterban and Joe Bonsall, who have been performing together since 1973.

The band includes Ron Fairchild, keyboards, who has been with the Oak Ridge Boys 20 years; Don Carr, lead guitarist who has also played for Marie Osmond and Dottie West; Chris Golden, son of William Lee Golden, on drums; and Paul Martin, bass guitarist, who is a former lead singer for Exile.

The shows in Matthews Auditorium will be the full 90-minute tour show.

Tickets are $27 each and can be purchased at the school 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The box office will also be open from 1-3 p.m. Saturday. There is no parking fee.
