Sectional Wrestling - Division II

Ross senior gets pin to go 22-0

BY MARK SCHMETZER

Aaron Ray isn't happy with just winning a wrestling match. He wants to leave the mat feeling as if he dominated his opponent.

Ray, a Ross senior, has reached that goal far more often than not this season. The 140-pounder ran his record to 22-0 with a pin of Bellbrook's Andrew Kender to earn a semifinal berth in the Division II district wrestling tournament at Wilmington High School on Friday night.

“I was pretty drained from cutting weight,” said Ray, almost apologizing for taking so long to pin a 26-9 senior. “That's still no excuse for getting points scored on me.”

Ray was the only Rams wrestler to reach the semifinals, which start today at 11a.m. The finals are at 6 p.m. Purcell Marian and Wilmington each are sending three wrestlers to the semifinals, while Loveland and Kings are sending two.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualify for next week's state tournament.

Ray's technique hasn't changed from last season, when he didn't suffer his first loss until the first round of the state tournament at 130 pounds.

He rebounded to win five matches and finish third in the state, and he has overcome injury problems to extend that streak with 22 consecutive wins this season. He broke the school record of 108 career wins with his first victory in last week's sectional tournament.

“He's been taken the distance in just one match this season,” Ross coach Rich Dunn said. “Every other match has either been a technical fall or a pin. He comes at it loaded up and double-barrelled all the time.”

Ray is driven by the frustration of losing in the first round at Columbus last season.

“I get mad if I don't totally dominate the match or feel like I dominated it,” Ray said.

Wilmington finished third in last week's sectional, but they rebounded with three semifinalists, led by junior Joe Ross at 152 pounds.

Sophomore Jake Meinking (103), junior Jason Lackmeyer (215) and senior Lamont Dixon (152) will represent Purcell Marian in the semifinals.

The Cavaliers would have had four if sophomore Jack Mitchell could have matched his first-round upset by pin of Preble Shawnee senior Butch Wood at 130. Instead, Mitchell was overwhelmed Franklin senior Mike Bertels.

“That first-round match was the highlight of his day,” Purcell Marian coach Terry Meinking said. “It helps a young kid to get a big win like that.

“We hoped we might get four out, but we lost at 189 (senior sectional champion Frank Jimmar). Other than that, things went pretty much as we expected.”

One of the bigger surprises among the other qualifiers was Loveland sophomore 112-pounder Joe Lamplot, who bounced back from a third-place at the sectionals to pin Wilmington runner-up Nick Harris of Edgewood in the first round and beat Preble Shawnee champion Josh Bolton of Bellbrook in the quarterfinals.
