Ursuline swimmers take big lead

In 'good shape' to claim title today

BY DAVE SCHUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

CANTON — Tami Ransom, Kelli Krallman and Whitney Myers each won individual state swimming championships Friday, giving Ursuline a commanding 36-point lead after the first day of the girls state swimming and diving championships.

In Division II, defending state champion Gates Mills Hawken took a huge 1201/2-point lead over Sycamore, with the Hawks winning one relay and two individual events.

Although none of the Ursuline swimmers broke state or national records, the team swam well.

“I think we're where we want to be,” Ursuline coach Tim Beerman said. “Considering that we started off behind because of no relay team, I'd say we're in good shape.”

At the sectional meet two weeks ago, Krallman was called for a false start that denied the Lions an opportunity to defend their state title in the relay.

“Tonight I had to make up for that mistake,” Krallman said after winning the butterfly. “I let the team down, and this was my way of giving back.”

        Division I events:

        • 200 medley relay: Oak Hills had the fastest morning qualifying time of 1:48.26, but Akron Firestone was up to the challenge in the finals, swimming the distance in 1:47.18. Oak Hills was second (1:47.32).

        • 200 freestyle: Myers, a freshman, gave Ursuline its first individual state title, swimming a 1:48.60.

“I trained hard for this and I'm proud of myself,” Myers said. “I was nervous in the morning preliminaries but relaxed tonight. It was my personal best time.”

        • 200 Individual Medley: Ursuline junior Tami Ransom was geared to challenge former St. Ursula star Alison Fealey's state record (1:59.96, set in 1995), but it wasn't to be. Ran som swam the event in 2:01.94.

        • 50 Freestyle: The top three finishers were freshmen, with Katie Carroll from Toledo Notre Dame edging Megan Tomes from Anderson.

“My time isn't a personal best,” Tomes said. “At the district I took three breaths, but tonight I took only two and I picked up some time.”

        • 100 Butterfly: It was close throughout, with Krallman behind with 50 yards to go. But the Ursuline sophomore was up to the challenge.

Here's a look at Division II races involving Cincinnati swimmers:

        • 200 Medley Relay: A strong finish by freshman Betsy Carey gave Indian Hill second place, the highest-ever finish by its girls team in swimming.

        • 200 Individual Medley: Williamsburg sophomore Betsy Jo Brcoman swam the race of her life, and took fourth behind Shelly Klaus from Gates Mills Hawken in 2:08.12.

        • 100 Butterfly: Indian Hill senior Katie Carey was Cincinati's best, swimming the distance in 58.97.

Action resumes today with the preliminaries at 8:30 a.m. The finals start at 6 p.m.
