CANTON St. Xavier won a record 22nd boys state swimming championship, easily defeating Cleveland St. Ignatius 394-182 at C.T. Branin Natatorium on Saturday.
Akron Firestone (173.5) was third, followed by Upper Arlington (161) and Anderson (142).
... Depth was the difference, St. Xavier coach Jim Brower said. We brought 19 people to state, eight who had never been here before and only three who has been in a championship final. Every swimmer scored.
Ursuline's trio of Whitney Myers, Tami Ransom and Kelli Krallman carried the Lions to a third state title in the Division I girls meet.
The girls never let up and achieved the goal they set early in the season, Ursuline coach Tim Beerman said.
St. Xavier junior Jayme Cramer was the standout Cincinnati swimmer, breaking the state record in both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, one on each night of the two-day meet.
Sycamore senior Dan Ketchum closed out a brilliant career with state titles in the 200 and 500 freestyle races for the third consecutive year.
Also, St. Xavier's 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams won state championships.
Myers (200 and 500 freestyle) and Ransom (200 individual medley and 100 freestyle) were double winners while Krallman was tops in the 100 butterfly.
St. Ursula's Rachel Tepe also finished on top in the 100 backstroke, winning the event in 56.68.
