Busy week for high schools

BY DAVE SCHUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Handing out awards will keep officials from the Ohio High School Athletic Association busy this week.

Besides the state wrestling tournament in Columbus and the state gymnastics meet in Dublin, district champions will be crowned in girls basketball and sectional titles will be awarded in boys basketball.

Cincinnati will be represented by 72 athletes at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus, the site for the state wrestling championship.

No Cincinnati team has ever won or finished as high as second but Moeller will take 10 wrestlers to state in an effort to challenge heavily favored Lakewood St. Edward, the No.1 team in the country.

As a result of winning the Southwest District Gymnastics championship, Anderson is poised to challenge Rocky River Magnificat and Worthington Kilbourne for state supremacy.

“We're on a roll,” Anderson coach Stacey Neumann said. “We also won the league and city championship tournaments and this is the first time an Anderson gymnastics team qualified to state.”

A young team, Anderson's two most consistent performers have been freshman Kelsey Ericksen and sophomore Kelli Wageman.

In Division I girls basketball Saturday, Princeton meets Beavercreek while Mercy plays undefeated Trotwood Madison with the winner advancing to the Columbus regional.

Undefeated and No.1 rank ed Mason opens Saturday's five-game Division I schedule at noon, taking on St. Ursula. Mount Notre Dame plays Centerville and Colerain meets Clayton Northmont in the other games.

Four Cincinnati-area Division II girls teams will be in action Friday at Vandalia Butler with Madeira, Wyoming and Waynesville playing in the Division III district Saturday, also at Vandalia.

Boys sectional basketball champions will be crowd in Division II (at Anderson), III (at Sycamore) and IV (at Loveland) throughout the week. Because of scheduling conflicts with UC's Shoemaker Center and Millett Hall in Oxford, the Division I sectional championship games will be delayed until March6.
