Friend named to fill empty council seat

BY WALT SCHAEFER
The Cincinnati Enquirer

BLUE ASH — Robert J. “Jack” Buckman Jr. will finish the City Council term of his longtime friend and neighbor Robert F. Schueler.

“People have asked me if I'll be taking Bob's place. No one can take his place. I'll be sitting in his chair,” said Mr. Buckman, 62, who was chosen from five applicants to fill Mr. Schueler's unexpired term, which runs through December 2001.

Mr. Schueler, who was re-elected to City Council here every two years from 1973 through last year and was a past mayor, died at his home Jan. 22.

“From what I know of Jack Buckman, he is a team player. That is something that has made Blue Ash successful. I know of no city council or administration that has such a team effort,” City Manager Marvin Thompson said. ""He'll fit right in.

“He is a longtime resident (of 31 years) with a knowledge of our community. He understands government. He was sworn in and took his seat (last) Thursday, and he was familiar with the issues before council. He read up on them, and he hit the deck running.”

Said Mr. Buckman: “I have always been interested in the workings of Blue Ash. We have seen it grow ... and that is something I'm proud to be a part of.”

Said Mayor Jim Sumner: “Jack is going to be an exceptional councilman. We are very excited to have him on council, and it is so appropriate he be appointed since he and Bob Schueler were such longtime good friends and neighbors.”

Mr. Buckman said he hopes to seek election to council in 2001 and intends to make council a long-term commitment.
