Clermont Co. commissioner (Rep.)

BY TOM O'NEILL
The Cincinnati Enquirer

BATAVIA — The GOP primary race for the Clermont County commissioners board is a battle between two local political veterans.

Incumbent Richard Martin, 66, who is seeking his third term, is challenged by Mary Walker, 53, a Union Township trustee. Between them, they have several decades of public service.

Key issues include alleviating traffic in Clermont's increasingly congested western half, privatization of government services such as the water district, and managing residential growth.

Mr. Martin, who like Ms. Walker lives in Union Township and previously was a trustee there, emphasized his fiscally conservative approach and close working relationship with fellow Republican commissioners Martha Dorsey and Robert Proud.

“One thing we try to do is maximize every dollar,” Mr. Martin said. “I would like to finalize the 911 communications system and all of our building programs, and alleviate our road traffic.”

Both candidates say privitizing government services should be decided on a case-by-case basis. In January, the county awarded contracts to two firms to operate its water system. Commissioners estimated annual savings of $3.4 million.

But Ms. Walker countered that the public is too often left out of decision-making. She also said her work as trustee and on the zoning board has helped her solve problems among diverse interests.

“There's a lack of leadership in the county,” Ms. Walker said. “Right now, the public is pretty much being ignored. I'd represent their interests.”
