Hamilton Co. commissioner (Rep.)
BY DAN KLEPAL
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Roy McGrath will challenge John Dowlin in the primary election for the Republican Party nomination to the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners.
The winner of the primary will take on Democrat and Colerain Township Trustee Joe Wolterman in the November general election.
Mr. Dowlin, a long-time mayor of Sharonville, was appointed to the commission in 1992 to replace now Ohio Gov. Bob Taft. Mr. McGrath has run unsuccessfully for many local offices, most recently the Cincinnati Board of Education.
Mr. Dowlin said he wants to be re-elected to continue his work against unfunded state mandates when laws are made at the state level that cost counties money, but are not paid for by the state.
I think I represent the mainstream of Republican thought in Hamilton County, said Mr. Dowlin, who has been opposed to using sales tax to finance riverfront development. I have been the most conservative of the three county commissioners.
Mr. McGrath said if elected he will take the county out of the horse and buggy days. He said there are too many elected political offices on the county level and he would like to see them reduced to three: prosecutor, sheriff and commissioners.
We don't need a recorder, coroner or county engineer, he said.
