Warren Co. fire levies

BY DAVID ECK

LEBANON — Fire departments in two Warren County communities are asking voters to approve money issues on March 7.

Voters in Harlan Township will face a 1.62-mill, 20-year bond issue to build a 13,000-square-foot fire station at Ohio 123 and Morrow-Rossburg Road. Wayne Township voters will decide whether to renew a 2.45-mill, five-year levy for fire and ambulance operations.

A new Harlan Township fire station would replace a deteriorating pole building that was relocated from Morrow more than 20 years ago. The station also is too small for the all-volunteer department.

“We've run out of room for our equipment,” said Harlan Township Fire Chief Andy Mitton. “There just isn't room to handle some of the meetings that (the trustees) have. We've had a lot of problems with the building.”

The new station, if the bond issue is approved, will have four bays, a kitchen, a training room and offices. It will be designed so it can easily be expanded to accommodate more bays and sleeping quarters.

The bond issue would cost the owner of a $50,000 home about $25 a year in new taxes.

Plans are to have an architect selected by mid-March and begin construction early next year, Chief Mitton said.

“We've had excellent support in the past,” he said. “We're not going to rush this. We cannot have a cost overrun.”

The Wayne Township levy, if approved, will generate $180,000 a year, said Wayne Township Fire Chief Jack Gross. The levy was first approved in 1990.
