VANDALIA Chaminade-Julienne started the game with a 9-2 run en route to a 52-33 victory over Little Miami in a girls district championship game Friday at the Vandalia Butler Student Activities Center.
Chaminade, the No.1-ranked Division II team and defending state champion, controlled the game from the outset and was led by Megan Duffy, who scored a game-high 19 points.
Our offense has been very streaky, but the defense is very consistent, Chaminade coach Frank Goldsberry said. Tonight we had three or four good runs, and the defense did the rest.
Chaminade advances to the regional semifinals to face the Miffin-Lakewood winner at 6:15p.m. Tuesday at Vandalia.
Little Miami's only lead was at 2-0 after a Jessica Back field goal.
Duffy, a sophomore guard, scored the next six points for the Eagles, and Jessica Maimone hit a 3-pointer to make it 9-2.
Chaminade took a 26-16 lead into halftime behind a spread-out offense. Duffy and Brandie Hoskins consistently penetrated Little Miami's defense and found open outside shooters.
Chaminade did an outstanding job on defense, and they made their shots, Little Miami coach Ed Davis said. They took us out of everything that we do.
Little Miami cut the lead to 26-19 early in the third quarter but could get no closer.
The Eagles responded with an 8-0 run sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers by Maimone and Duffy.
Courtney Balser, Little Miami's leading scorer, was limited to six points. Ashley Richardson led Little Miami with 10 points.
