NewCath ends six-year district drought
Newport Central Catholic's six-year district championship drought ended Friday night at Newport High School.
Behind a 26-point effort by Ronnie Dawn, the Thoroughbreds registered a 59-41 victory over three-time defending district champion Highlands in the 36th district final.
NCC outscored Highlands 18-7 in the first quarter. Dawn scored 11 points in that period, including three 3-pointers.
Gino Guidugli led the Bluebirds with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Both teams advance to the regional tournament next Fri day at Ryle.

Scott 78, Lloyd 67, at 34th District at Beechwood Scott opened the game with a 6-0 run and led 19-7 after the first quarter, during which Chris Thompson scored nine of his game-high 24 points.
Thompson, a junior forward, scored his 1,000th career point, and Bryan Stevenson added 21 points for Scott. Damann Jamison led Lloyd with 16 points.
Scott, the district runner-up last year, qualified for the regionals for the fifth straight year.

Simon Kenton 65, Conner 62, at 33rd District at Boone County The Pioneers outscored the Cougars 19-5 in the third quarter to turn a one-point halftime lead into a 46-33 lead on the way to their third consecutive district title.
Jordan Stowers scored seven points and Brandon Coppage five points in the third quarter. Donnie Baker scored seven of his 10 points in the fourth quarter to hold off Conner's comeback bid.
The closest Conner got to the lead after halftime was the final score. Jason Edwards led the Cougars with 19 points.
