Defense wins it for MND

BY DAVE SCHUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

WILMINGTON — Quietly and unspectacularly, the Mount Notre Dame girls basketball team keeps winning.

With an aggressive man-to-man defense and steady free-throw shooting, the Cougars beat Centerville 56-39 Saturday to win the Division I district chamionship at Wilmington College. It was the team's second straight district title.

Mount Notre Dame advances to the Division I regional semifinals at Wright University on at 8 p.m. Tuesday against Beavercreek.

“There's no secret to our game,” MND coach Lisa Hayden said. “We have no standout players, but we play good defense and if one girl is off, someone else steps up.”

The Cougars led 22-19 at halftime, then offense scored 21 in the third quarter to take a 43-32 lead. MND forced 17 turnovers in the second half.

“We're normally not a team that commits a lot of fouls,” Centerville coach Kathy Hill said. “But today our top four players were in foul trouble and that's tough to overcome.”

Hill was referring to the inside trio of Jennifer Uptmor, Allison Vondrell and Meredith Gunnoe, each of whom had four fouls, and point guard Kasi Carpenter, who fouled out.

Mount Notre Dame converted 18 of 30 free throws in the second half and 21 of 34 for the game. Centerville was 4-of-11 from the free-throw line.

“We play as a team and everybody steps up,” MND's Jen Emming said. “The difference today was our press, which allowed us to pull it out in the second half.”
