VANDALIA, Ohio Madeira outscored Versailles 14-6 in the fourth quarter to upset the highly ranked Tigers 35-26 for the Division III district title at Vandalia-Butler Student Activities Center.
Madeira advances to the regional semifinals against Morale Ridgedale on Wednesday at Versailles.
Amanda Davis made the key play of the game for the Amazons.
Versailles had the ball with four seconds remaining in the third quarter and a 20-18 lead. Davis stole a pass and sank a desperation 3-pointer from 30-feet as the buzzer sounded to give Madeira a 21-20 lead and the momentum heading into the fourth quarter.
I just threw up the shot, I didn't think it would go in, Davis said.
The play was just what Madeira needed. Versailles tied it 21-21 early in the fourth quarter before Madeira took the lead for good with 6:36 remaining on a Bess Krietemeyer free throw.
Lindsey Barnhart added a stickback off an offensive rebound and Ann Staubach hit two free throws to push the lead to 26-21 with 5:21 left.
Krietemeyer sealed the outcome with 1:17 remaining with a traditional 3-point play. She added a pair of free throws with 1:07 to give Madeira a 33-24 lead.
We only had one week to figure out their zone. We had to remain patient and find openings, Madeira coach Dave Schlensker said. Another key was to hold them to one shot attempt.
Madeira was successful in both cases. The Amazons controlled the tempo from the outset. A patient offense that slowed the pace, coupled with a tenacious pressing defense, resulted in a 14-14 halftime tie.
