NewCath must withstand another shot from CovCath

Puts 18-game win streak on line

UNION — Newport Central Catholic has won its last 18 games, climbed to 10th in the state boys basketball rankings and put together a 27-5 record.

But Covington Catholic — the team responsible for one of the losses — awaits the Thoroughbreds in the first round of the Ninth Region tournament at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ryle High School.

CovCath beat NewCath, 69-49, on Jan. 11. NewCath junior guard Ronny Dawn scored 25 then, but his dad, coach Ron Dawn, said Saturday his son was nursing an injured ankle that night and shot poorly from the field.

“Ronny didn't have a good night,” Ron Dawn said. “(CovCath junior center Chad) Wachs probably had six or seven blocks that night.”

CovCath coach Dan Tieman stated the obvious after Saturday's meeting to determine the bracket: containing Ronny Dawn is not the only thing that has to happen.

“Ronny Dawn may be the leading scorer, but they're a solid team all the way through,” Tieman said. “(Junior forward Seth) Lynn can shoot the three, (senior guard Tony) Bacigalupo can shoot the three, (junior guard Vince) Bonhaus can shoot the three.”

Like NewCath, Simon Kenton and Holmes won their district but seek revenge for regular season losses.
