Waynesville knocks off Wyoming

BY JOHN SCHUTTE
Enquirer contributor

VANDALIA, Ohio The Waynesville girls avenged their only loss of the year, knocking off perennial Division III district champions Wyoming 52-38 Saturday afternoon at Vandalia Butler Activity Center. Wyoming beat Waynesville 38-35 in a December regular season matchup.

The district championship is Waynesville's first since 1981. The Spartans (23-2) advance to the regional semifinals against Northwestern (23-1) Wednesday at Vandalia.

The Spartans shot a blistering 16-of-24 (67 percent) from the floor and were perfect (6-for-6) from 3-point range.

Seniors Jessica Hupe and Jennifer Kapper were instrumental in the victory. Hupe (19 points) and Kapper (16 points) combined for 35 points after scoring just 11 in the first meeting.

“I had such a rough game when we played them in December, the whole team was intimidated” Hupe said “Tonight we felt confident and relaxed, that's why we were making all of our shots.”

Hupe sparked a 9-2 run to open the game with three field goals and two free throws in the first 3:15.

The second half started much the same way the game did. Anna Jo Edwards hit a 3-pointer. After a Wyoming free throw Hupe hit a 3-pointer which pushed the lead to 33-19. Hupe's three gave her 1,000 career points.

“I can't think of a better game to reach that milestone,” Hupe said.

Wyoming had no answer for hot-shooting Waynesville.

“We aren't going home with any secrets, we tried every defense imaginable to try and stop them, ” Wyoming coach Deb Gentile said.

The defeat is Wyoming's first district loss under veteran head coach Deb Gentile. Wyoming won every district title in the 1990's except for 1995.

        WAYNESVILLE (52) — Hupe 6 4 19, Edwards 1 0 3, Nelson 1 3 6, Parsons 0 1 1, Kapper 6 3 16, Elam 1 0 2, Measel 1 3 5. Totals: 16-24 14-21 52.
